It's an international heavyweight which has name-recognition across much of the world. The New York Times has one of the most respectable names in the world of journalism, it's entertainment and literature critics are quoted extensively.

2) The Wall Street Journal

The stock exchange may be what New York City is most known for. The conservative The Wall Street Journal is the most popular newspaper in the nation, but it's popularity is second to the New York Times for New Yorkers. The average income of a Wall Street Journal reader is $191,000. New York's most powerful economists, businessmen and stock brokers use the Wall Street Journal in order to judge the zeitgeist of the nation. If something appears in the Wall Street Journal then chances are that people on Wall Street are talking about it.

3) New York Daily News

The New York Daily News doesn't try to take on the two giants, but it's widely followed in New York City. The New York Daily News is designed to be read by local New Yorkers and it's the one that reflects New Yorkers the most. It has a UK-style tabloid format which means it specializes in covering celebrities, gossip and scandals.

4) New York Post

The New York Post is the oldest daily newspaper in the nation. Published in the tabloid style, the New York Post is well-known for it's sensationalism and for having the latest scoops on celebrities and political figures. It's well known for it's sports column and is considered to be the go-to-guide for New York's sports fans.

5) Newsday

Newsday is the local newspaper for residents of Queens and Nassau. It has a well-known reputation for covering local politics and being credible. It has a strong following in the aforementioned areas and has enough clout to push local elections.

New Jersey's Most Popular Newspapers

1) Newark Star Ledger

The Newark Star Ledger is the most popular newspaper in the state of New Jersey and the 16th most popular in the nation. The newspaper has been going through financial difficulties for the past decade and it closed half of it's newsrooms in 2009. It's sometimes criticized by residents for not strongly attacking local political incumbents.

2) The Bergen Record

The Bergen Record is the right-wing counterpart of the Star Ledger. It's not nearly as popular as the Newark Star Ledger, but still commands a strong base of support throughout the state. Recently, The Record and Star Ledger joined forces to share content. This was a surprising move for two newspapers that once considered each other enemies.

3) The Asbury Park Press

The daily newspaper of Monmouth and Ocean Counties, The Asbury Park Press has the third highest circulation in New Jersey. Even though it's not as popular as the previous two, The Asbury Park Press is well-known for boasting a strong staff of investigators and editors.
