The New York Times has one of the most respectable names in the world of journalism, it's entertainment and literature critics are quoted extensively.
2) The Wall Street Journal
The stock exchange may be what New York City is most known for. The conservative The Wall Street Journal is the most popular newspaper in the nation, but it's popularity is second to the New York Times for New Yorkers. The average income of a Wall Street Journal reader is $191,000. New York's most powerful economists, businessmen and stock brokers use the Wall Street Journal in order to judge the zeitgeist of the nation. If something appears in the Wall Street Journal then chances are that people on Wall Street are talking about it.

New Jersey's Most Popular Newspapers
1) Newark Star Ledger
The Newark Star Ledger is the most popular newspaper in the state of New Jersey and the 16th most popular in the nation. The newspaper has been going through financial difficulties for the past decade and it closed half of it's newsrooms in 2009. It's sometimes criticized by residents for not strongly attacking local political incumbents.
2) The Bergen Record
The Bergen Record is the right-wing counterpart of the Star Ledger. It's not nearly as popular as the Newark Star Ledger, but still commands a strong base of support throughout the state. Recently, The Record and Star Ledger joined forces to share content. This was a surprising move for two newspapers that once considered each other enemies.
3) The Asbury Park Press
The daily newspaper of Monmouth and Ocean Counties, The Asbury Park Press has the third highest circulation in New Jersey. Even though it's not as popular as the previous two, The Asbury Park Press is well-known for boasting a strong staff of investigators and editors.
