Mistake to Attack Clinton and Schumer; They’re Not Our Real Enemies

TO THE EDITORS:

Re: “Days Are Numbered for Clinton, Schumer” (Op-ed by Allen Roskoff, Aug. 22)

It seems Allen Roskoff abides by the old adage: Don’t let the facts ruin a good story. His version of my invitation to the White House is a total fabrication. But why bother with fact-checking.

More to the point, let’s remember that only four U.S. senators currently support full marriage equality: Ted Kennedy (D-Mass.), Ron Wyden (D-Ore.), Russ Feingold (D-Wisc.) and Sheldon Whitehouse (D-R.I.). Yes, we have to hold all our elected officials to a high standard of support for our community, but let’s be clear who our real enemies are. I, for one, have personally confronted George Bush, Dick Cheney, Colin Powell, Sam Nunn, Trent Lott and Karl Rove, to name just a few of the truly disgraceful people in power who are completely opposed to any sort of equality for us.

So before Roskoff declares some of us to be principled or not, he should check his facts. And if he wants to attack supporters of Sens. Chuck Schumer and Hillary Clinton, perhaps he should explain his long-standing support of Sen. Barack Obama, who also does not support marriage equality. Or are you you turning your back on real change and not voting in November, Allen?

Fred P. Hochberg [New York City]

Roskoff responds: I never endorsed Obama in the primary. In fact, the club of  which I am president, The Jim Owles Liberal Democratic Club, did a no endorsement in the primary because of the marriage issue. I voted for Obama only as a preferred candidate. If Clinton were now the Democratic nominee, I would support her.
