New York Blade announces merger with HX Media

Friday, December 02, 2005

It’s a new era for the New York Blade.

The company that publishes the city’s gay newspaper has announced it is joining with the publisher of HX Magazine, the popular nightlife guide, to create a new venture that will produce both publications. The new company, to be called HX Media LLC, will also produce the Gay Life Expo in cities across the country.

Matthew Bank, publisher and co-founder of HX, becomes the chief executive officer of the new company, which will be headquartered in the existing HX offices on 17th Street. Bank will remain publisher of HX, and said he also expects to assume a hands-on role in shaping the future direction of the New York Blade.

“We’re very proud to be joining these successful business,” he said. “HX Media LLC will be the leader in quality publications and events for the gay community.”

The New York Blade was launched in 1997 as a sister publication to the Washington Blade, Washington D.C.’s venerated gay newspaper that dates back to 1969. Both papers were purchased in 2001 by Window Media. Today, Window and its affiliated companies operate the nation’s largest gay print media company, reaching more than 500,000 readers each week in five major markets.

William Waybourn, president of Window Media, said the partnership with HX Media LLC will expose both readers and advertisers to new aspects of the community.

“We are excited about the new relationship and that the New York Blade is included in this powerful publishing and marketing group. This is a good fit for us because it helps strengthen our coverage of the New York market.”

Bank co-founded HX Magazine in 1991, and the glossy weekly quickly established itself as a comprehensive guide to the city’s gay nightlife and entertainment options. The magazine, which has been copied in many cities around the world, is New York’s longest-running gay weekly.

Principals from the new company said that the New York Blade and HX Magazine will continue to be printed weekly as two separate publications, with a greater focus on spot news coverage and politics in the pages of the Blade.

“Ideally, the content of the two publications will complement each other,” Bank said. “We want both the New York Blade and HX to be must-read publications for gay New Yorkers.”
