When Schoolhouse Roxx promoted “A Night of Dirty Songs,” hosted by
the fetchingly filthy comediennes Jessica Delfino and Chelsea Peretti, they should
have called it “some of the most nasty, offensive, degrading and genius
comedy you’ll see all year.”
From the “Girls Gone Wild” video that greeted us, to the nonstop
rape jokes, to Nachi singing about “faggots,” there were no sacred
cows left untouched. Not for the faint of heart, the very Downtown audience
was treated to the ridiculous and naughty Corn Mo, Hot Little Pieces of Ass,
Touching You, and “hecklers” who were given pre-made cards on which
to spew their epithets. This was the kind of night that would have John Ashcroft
rushing for a warrant on obscenity charges.
Switching the pace just slightly was the first in the Fez Reading Series,
honoring a different author each time. Every woman I know grew up reading Judy
Blume, but it took a straight male comedian to organize a tribute to the talented
author that brought back all those painful, awkward adolescent moments.
Jennifer Abbot compared Blume’s classic fat-girl saga “Blubber” to
Moby Dick. Miriam Parker told a tale of her own teen angst. Organizer Greg
Gilderman is reprising it in September, with a special appearance by Blume
herself!
Melody Henry didn’t make an appearance till late in the evening, long
after Hustle & Bussel had gone home, but the premiere of her Snatch party
at Lucky 13 seemed to be a success, with three go-go girls jiggling away, lesbian
porn on the screen and hazelnut martinis and cheap PBR chugged all around.
The gaggle of Brooklyn dykes, including members of the band Triple Crème
(who play Saturday at CBGB’s), looked perfectly at home in this goth/punk/alternative
bar. If you missed it, catch Snatch again July 19th.
I asked the sexy, tattooed Henry, “Aren’t there enough dyke parties
out there already?” Not for her. “I love freaky punk and rock ‘n’ roll
women and wanted to create a night for those women in particular,” she
explained. “When I was younger and going to dyke bars, I felt so out
of place. I had purple hair and wore a lot of makeup and high heeled boots.
I walked into Crazy Nanny’s way back when for the first time and felt
like a total alien. I want all kinds of women to feel comfortable at Snatch,
especially the ones who may have felt a little ‘off’ at other nights.”
Certainly, the crowd was a mix of tough punks, sexy babes and regular joes\,
while blaring death rock, Joan Jett and Hole. Local writer Cheryl B., who’s
heading up the Atomic Reading Series at Lucky 13, said she’s “always
up for a night of hanging with friends at a fabulous bar with great music and
hot burlesque go-go girls!”
Speaking of dyke parties, dyke mag Velvetpark’s bash to celebrate its
new issue wound up with plenty of dyke debauchery. Editor Grace Moon says, “The
party ended with a bang. Seven couples participated in the kissing contest — with
creative judging by Alix Olson and Pamela Means. It got so hot and torrid that
couples were rolling around on the floor.”
Czar (www.czarmusic.com) is a rocking new gay musical talent who’s at
the Belt Theater all this weekend. You won’t want to miss it. Promoting
his “Ambrosia For The Gods” album, this sex-inspired performer
will wow you with his intense (and erotic) songs and latex-clad dancers.
