NITE LIFE

Defend obsenity, dammit!
John Ashcroft hears filthy language; Felice Shays penetrates a melon; Mark Russell gets a send-off from PS 122.

By Rachel Kramer Bussel

Don’t miss your chance to defend “obscenity” while also taking in some fine, kinky entertainment. On Friday, April 30, sex shop Purple Passion will host “Indecent” to raise money for erotic photographer Barbara Nitke’s lawsuit against Attorney General John Ashcroft to overturn the Communications Decency Act.

I’ll be joined by contributors to my “Up All Night” erotic anthology, including renowned S/M author Laura Antoniou. Artist Courtney Bowers will perform “Worthy Cock Receptacle.” Plus, you’ll be able to bid on items such as jewelry, art and fancy dinners.

Felice Shays is one hot number. I saw her fist a watermelon onstage at Meow Mix once, but her latest event promises to top that. Dubbed the “Carnal Carnival: A Queer Cabaret,” it’s a veritable Who’s Who of sexy dykes that’s described as “not your average queer, smart, femme, butch, andro, trans, other, all of the above, sex show!” Among the many other performers: Marga Gomez, Red Hots Burlesque, Jess Dobkin, Grover, Kate Huh, Sir Real, and Amatul/Animal Skins. Don’t miss the last shows April 30 and May 1 at WOW Café.

The Lambda Literary Awards are the highest pinnacle for queer writers and some of the talented nominees read their work at the Center, including Don Weise, who read about gay civil rights leader Bayard Rustin’s effect on that movement, and Marijane Meaker, who read from her intimate biography of Patricia Highsmith and stole the show with a tale of coming across a naked gay man on Fire Island — to both of their horror!

I caught ‘80s night, as interpreted by the aptly named Red Hots Burlesque, at one of their last shows at Parkside. Not to worry, they will be performing soon at a venue near you. These hotties took my breath away as they channeled everyone from Tom Cruise to Madonna with songs like “White Wedding,” and a fabulous cheerleader ensemble to “Mickey.”

Speaking of burlesque, the second annual New York burlesque festival prances into town May 14 to 16, featuring everything from a game show at Coney Island to the Golden Pastie Awards. With performers from all over the world, these stunners really are the crème de la crème of the showgirl world and will leave you dizzy and dazzled. See www.thenewyorkburlesquefestival.com for all the glittery details.

And speaking of the end of an era, Gloss, the fabulous long-running Thursday night party hosted by Rachael and Chloe Jo is coming to an end with a blowout bash at Meow Mix on May 6 that you won’t want to miss. They’ll be in attendance along with Murray Hill, several DJs and all the hottest dykes in the city to ring in the end of their run.

Ladies, ladies, where are you? I recently checked out Nowhere’s Monday night scene, only to find a handful of people. Where’s a single East Village dyke to go to get her flirt on if not this bar filled with two naked-girl video game machines, a rockin’ jukebox and 2-for-1 drinks? (Though if you find yourself on the L train on a Monday, gay bar Metropolitan is offering up $1 beers and PB-and-J sandwiches!).

I’ll be reading at the next installment of the WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) series on the topic of “Ladies First: The Hottest Women of Blog Dish About the First Time They …” along with my good friend Girlynyc (not her real name!), Sarah Lewitinn, Lindsay Robertson, Jamye Waxman and Jessica Delfino May 18 at PS 122. Every single performer at this blogger is great.

Speaking of PS 122, don’t miss “Rave Revue” on May 12, put on by nonprofit FEVA, with everyone from Meredith Monk, Joni Mitchell impersonator John Kelly, Karen Finley, Eric Bogosian and DJing by Lady Bunny and many others, honoring Mark Russell, who steps down as director of PS 122 after 20 years. Since I now seem to find myself at PS 122 seemingly every other week, I will certainly be there.
