Janine Avril’s Girlsalon made the official switch from Meow Mix to the
much more aesthetically pleasing Starlight with a long, stellar lineup.
Though I adore Janine, she sometimes has a tendency to overbook her lineups
and has promised that future shows will not be quite as long as this three-plus
hour extravaganza. The literary hour was hosted by the fabulous Cheryl B.,
and featured a mix of everything from righteous politics to dirty words to
unrequited crushes. Performers included Angela Jiminez, Tami Johnson, Chris
Gross, Michele Balan, and Robin Cloud.
Janine’s been busy organizing the launch party for Michelle Tea’s
latest wild collection “Pills, Thrills, Chills and Heartache: Adventure
in the First Person,” a riveting collection of 40 authors, all of whom
will be on hand along with the World Famous *BoB* April 10 at Remote Lounge
for a night sure to be filled with the book title’s promised excitement.
Burlesque performer (and occasional Coral Room mermaid) Julie Atlas Muz’s
new show, “The Rite of Spring” at Dance Theater Workshop, comes
with this hard-not-to-love description: “Glitter, sweat, wild abstractions
of sex flowers, death metal, floral insects on eight-foot stilts, lust, fear,
violence and freedom.”
And here I thought DTW featured very tame performances that my grandmother
would attend! You can catch her this Friday and Saturday in this one-of-a-kind
stunner.
Another reading series that is trying to be the anti-reading series, hosted
by sexy blogger Lindsay Robertson of Lindsayism.com, also had hipster New York
writers out and about for her inaugural Ritalin Reading Series, so named for
the blessed four-minute time limit on our scribes.
One guy gave a hilarious speech in the voice of Christina Aguilera, while
another unearthed his 10th-grade book report on Led Zeppelin, complete with
background music. Nothing like digging up old notebooks to send everyone back
to the now-funny humiliation of high school.
Murray Hill’s Oscar party was all that we could have expected, with
Murray getting confused about the time the show started, and Dirty Martini
flaunting about the stage in a series of skimpy (but color-coordinated) outfits.
Murray, though slightly off key, had us scream various vitriolic statements
whenever a certain actor or actress appeared on screen or got a mention (notably “NAMBLA” for
Ian McKellan, “Hey, Monster!” for Charlize Theron). A generally
jolly party, which was necessary to liven up the otherwise boring ceremony.
Speaking of readings, Sunday night the Red Hots Burlesque hosted its first
literary night, “A Night of Brains and Brawn,” featuring hotties
such as Jamye Waxman, Bethany Spiers and JenLux reading steamy tales. Waxman
waxed nostalgic about what she learned about masturbation — from her
brother!
“I love performing in front of other people, especially on more taboo
topics,” she said. “Not that anything is taboo these days, I guess.”
The hottest, most creative burlesque act around is bringing us all back 20
years with their 80s night. On April 18, come see the Red Hots Burlesque as
they pay tribute to Pacman, Madonna and other 80s icons, surely to be fashioned
in sexily skimpy outfits.
Promised songs include “Girls Just Want To Have Fun” and “Pink
Cadillac,” and if anyone can wring out the full camp value of these classics,
these hotties, whose names (Dottie Lux, Scooter Pie, Peekaboo Pointe, Little
Brooklyn, Delirium Tremens, Veronika Sweet) are as luscious as they are, can.
They’re also there every Sunday and Thursdays at Rififi (as Starshine
Burlesque), baring their hot bods for your entertainment.
Marion’s, the fun bar which also runs the hot-guy-filled Marquee and
the Slide (which is now offering a same sex marriage special drink), has its
usual lineup of fun burlesque events this season, including a gospel country
brunch on April 11, with Easter hat show. Upcoming events include the Father’s
Day burlesque brunch (!) and the World Famous Pontani Sisters, so get ready
to get dolled up and drink up.
