I’ve been extremely busy the last few weeks, and haven’t had as much
time to really get my hustle on. But the good news is, all my hard work has paid
off, and now I’ll have time to go out every night in November and get my
fill of queer nightlife!
I hope you’ve been able to take advantage of Center Bingo, Bang! Bang!
Burlesque, smut, and even — oh my! — queer vaudeville.
I was lucky enough to catch a rare glimpse of 17-year-old memoirist Zoe Trope,
author of the recent “Please Don’t Kill the Freshman,” an
account of this very bright, funny queer girl’s first two years of high
school in Oregon.
Trope is wise beyond her years, and comes across at least five, if not 10
years older than her chronological age, and indeed made me feel more than a
tad awed at her poise, humor and intelligence. Trope, like queer novelist J.T.
LeRoy, keeps her image under wraps for privacy reasons, but comes across as
being a very smart cookie.
She was awed by the majesty of New York and extra excited that right after
her reading at Bluestockings, beloved “Dykes to Watch Out For” cartoonist
Alison Bechdel was reading, and was also suitably impressed with the spunky
Trope.
While my roommate recently returned from the real German Oktoberfest, I had
to make do with Octoberfist, the annual gay fisting celebration, this year
held at the Marquee/Slide, the upstairs/downstairs performance space/gay bar.
I wasn’t quite sure what to expect, but it certainly wasn’t a
crowd of German-attired dragsters, pseudo-Hitlers, misguided accent attempts,
pretzels on the table, beer everywhere and some of the most entertaining burlesque
around.
Lady Ace, aka Anna Curtis, truly stole the show with her dual turns, first
doing a robotic number with the word “Uber” in tape on her ass,
and then a truly inspired performance in which, dressed as a cute little Swiss
Miss-type girl in a fetching blue dress and blonde hair, she dumped beer, sauerkraut
and mustard into a huge pail, stomped in it and then splashed it all over herself
(and the audience) — and looked incredibly sexy doing so.
The smell slowly wafted towards us, and the audience was alternately thrilled
and appalled, but she looked so darn cute doing the whole thing that all was
forgiven.
Debate ran rampant through my table as to whether she looked hot enough to
lick the gross-smelling mixture off of her — I voted yes! It was especially
to nice to see some hot girls amidst the male-dominated scene — ladies
were off limits downstairs during the Fisting for Dollars segment (when is
there gonna be an all girl Fist Fest?), but my girlies took over the stage
for a little dirty dancing that would give Madonna and Britney a run for their
money.
Speaking of Lady Ace, she performs as part of the Bombshell Girls (www.bombshellgirls.com)
who are featured in the new Bang! Bang! Burlesque at Pyramid on Saturdays,
featuring go-go dancers, “Mom and Dad’s Erotic Video Show” (I’m
not sure what this is, and not sure if I exactly want to find out, but it’s
intriguing). Their performances leave little to the imagination, and are stunning,
sexy and always unique.
Halloween will find me at Flow partying with all the lovely lesbians, most
likely in my French maid outfit if it’s not too cold. You can also catch
me talking about erotica, one of my favorite topics, along with sexy sexperts
Tristan Taormino and Lily Burana on Playboy Radio.
“Chutney Popcorn” director Nisha Ganatra is back with a new film, “Cosmopolitan,” which
premieres November 5th at Lincoln Center. It’s quite a departure from
the queer family-themed “Popcorn,” but with a fun twist on pop
culture — a middle-aged Indian-American man tries to learn about women
from Elle Woods’ favorite mag.
I don’t know about you, but nothing makes me look forward to winter
more than the return of Center Bingo — which I missed out on the time
I tried to go because it sold out, so get there early! Get the full schedule
at www.gaycenter.org/program_folders/bingo. The next one’s November 14!
There are actually bingo games almost every night of the week at various bars,
but this one is sure to be the gayest one around (next runner up: Drag Queen
Bingo).
And for those of you busily marking up your calendars way ahead of time, November
25th is the launch of “Quickies 3,” the latest in James Johnstone’s
series of stories on gay male desire, and along with other contributors, I
will be there, reading a very dirty D/S love story called “Silence.” See
you on the town!
